Close ratio gear boxes, also known as short gear ratios, are essential components in motor racing, aimed at optimising the performance of a vehicle. They modify the final gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels, directly influencing the acceleration and responsiveness of the vehicle.
By installing a short gear, the engine reaches high revs faster, which improves acceleration and the ability to exit corners with more vigour. This modification is particularly banaficial on Twisty circuits or courses requiring frequent acceleration.
However, it is important to note that adopting a low gear ration can reduce the vehicle's top speed, as the engine reaches its maximum sound more quickly. Therefore, the choice of such a ration must be adapted to the type of competition or driving envisaged.
