The Pipercross Airmax intake system has been designed and developed to directly replace the original BMW/Mini airbox cover, air filter and intake pipe on the F56 2.0T (B48).

OEM INTAKE EVALUATION
The original intake system of Mini F56 2.0T (B48) vehicles features a unique combination of performance-oriented design aspects, combined with a multitude of compliance features expected from a high-volume and very popular Mini/BMW chassis. The original intake filter, the original upper air box, the original hoses and the original rear intake pipe (in particular the integrated soundproofing system) were all identified by the Pipercross engineering team as possibilities for improving intake air flow. However, the lower half of the original airbox (and the resulting panel filter shape/size) and the original front air duct were found to be sufficient to achieve Pipercross's airflow increase objectives. This decision was made based on the existing original intake characteristics, the specific size/functionality of the parts and the experience of Pipercross engineers in designing overall performance intakes on a multitude of engines/chassis.
To achieve the performance objectives of the Pipercross intake, the filtration media had to be improved with Pipercross's unique, higher-end panel filter. Both the airbox top cover and the rear intake pipe would require a complete redesign. The redesigned Pipercross cover would utilise traditional carbon fibre manufacturing methods to achieve larger internal post-filter volumes and improve internal flow geometry, both necessary to achieve the performance targets of the Pipercross kit. Similarly, the rear inlet pipe had to be completely replaced with a set of constant diameter aluminium pipes, mandrel bent, to eliminate the integrated, highly restrictive OE noise suppression chamber.

PANEL FILTER PLUS
Pipercross' flagship panel filter, the Pipercross Plus, serves as the performance basis for the Pipercross F56 Mini AirMax kit. This filter uses a hybrid, custom-made filtration foam stack to achieve an optimal balance between increased flow and air filtration. In addition, the Plus filter range features a 0.9 mm thick stainless steel support, digitally laser cut, an industry first, which increases the effective air flow by 22.1% compared to conventional steel mesh supports. In airflow tests carried out during development, the geometry of the Plus filter's aluminium support plate and hybrid foam media proved significantly more efficient than OE pleated panel filters.

AIRBOX COVER
The Pipercross F56 Mini AirMax cover fits perfectly with the Pipercross Plus filter, thus maximising the considerably increased air flow potential of the Plus filter. Using the latest 3D scanning and CAD technologies, the Pipercross cover has been carefully designed to gain significant internal post-filter volume without compromising OE fit/clearance standards. Similarly, this same technology has been employed to integrate an aluminium MAF sensor into a stabilised flow area of the Pipercross part (also with the same internal cross-section as the OE cover, at the sensor location), to ensure correct MAF readings and resultant engine operation. The increased volume of the after-filter and the installation of the mass air flow sensor have been combined in the overall Pipercross part with a geometry favourable to the internal air flow - to facilitate the formation of a laminar air flow after the filter and further increase the air flow of the AirMax cover.

REAR INTAKE HOSE (*Only included in the complete kit)
The rigid rear Pipercross F56 Mini hose complements the advantages offered by the AirMax cover and the Plus filter, taking the performance of the complete AirMax kit to a higher level. The Pipercross part completely replaces the original composite turbocharger inlet pipe, considerably increasing the air flow capacity thanks to the elimination of the original split chamber noise suppression system. The Pipercross assembly consists of an aluminium tube with a larger external diameter (76 mm compared to 70 mm for the original equipment), which makes it possible to further increase the air flow capacity thanks to this modest increase in size. This aluminium tube is bent by CNC mandrel to obtain a constant internal diameter over the entire section. To ensure the tightness of the OE components concerned, the Pipercross vacuum connectors and the turbocharger inlet connector were designed and positioned using Pipercross' in-house 3D scanner, then CNC machined from aluminium bars to exacting dimensional and finishing standards. Similarly, the design and positioning of the Pipercross mounting bracket were extracted from the same 3D scan data, in order to exactly reflect the angles and clearances of the OE pipes.
