Monte-Carlo Rally 1981
By Yves Gallet
Editions Neo Polychrono
First World Championship outing for the Audi Quattro, which totally dominated the rally before falling apart. First world championship victory for the Renault 5 Turbo. First Monte Carlo victory for a turbocharged engine. Jean-Luc Thérier's ill-rewarded exploit. But also for many others, as more than 260 cars took the start. The 1981 Monte Carlo Rally deserved a book.
The author, Yves Gallet (a former journalist and photographer who took part in the rally), has done just that, gathering many first-hand accounts, drawing on a wealth of documentation, and compiling numerous tables of starting crews, retirements, rankings in the various groups, and times achieved on the special stages by each of the participants.
The photographic illustrations are particularly rich and abundant: in addition to his extensive personal archives, the author has called on other photographers, particularly enlightened amateurs, who have all contributed to the extensive iconography. More than 450 photos, mostly in color, bear witness to the rally in pictures, from both professional and private crews. Almost everyone who took part has their own photo!
